***Dear Squid fans, our kitchen is closed due to our work engagement, we will re-open when the situation change, stay tuned***

Our kitchen run by a family of three, Lupa - a proud fisherman, Liz - the fisherman's daughter and the home cook and Gweilo - Lupa's little fishing assistant and the guy who take care the garden with fresh herbs and fruit at our back yard. The meal will be serve at our ocean front terrace in front of our family house built in the 70's. The cuisine is a mix of Cantonese and French recipes from our family and some special dishes that inspired by our extensive travels in South East Asia and Pacific Ocean.

Our place is perfect for travelers who want experience a whole different atmosphere than the downtown of Hong Kong, it's an exploration of the linkages between the gastronomy and heritage of our unique little fishing village, our ancestors settled in this area around 300 years ago. Please bare in mind it takes about 2 hours to travel to our place by bus/taxi plus a short boat trip from downtown, it's perfect to plan it like a day trip. Our house is within walking distance from a beach, a visit to the famous island Tap Mun right next to us is also recommended after lunch.

***In the A/W season, Lupa has good catch of squid and cattle fish, perfect for salad also to cook bouillabaisse. Gweilo will be happy to show you his garden and make you try the herb tea we infused with home grow herbs.

The last ferry leaves our island at 18:00, we are open for LUNCH ONLY.

We had a great time at The Mafan Gweilo and The Laughing Squid! The setting was beautiful as it's a table outside right by the water, and the food was fresh and delicious. Great way to relax and take a break from the busyness that is Hong Kong Island.

Had a wonderful first plateculture experience at Liz's place! Liz reached out and gave us very clear instruction ahead of the trip which made it super easy for us to get to Ko Lau Wan. Her place is a quick 3-min walk from the pier and the table was nicely set at a roofed patio outside, overlooking the beautiful, soothing ocean. The food was way beyond our expectation - the crabs were the freshest I've ever had (caught hours ago in the morning), the clams & squid were perfectly seasoned. After lunch, we took a quick stroll to the beach and encountered a few cows on the way, who seemed even more relaxed than we were. It was not just a meal. It was the perfect getaway - not too far from the busy city but far enough to enjoy a completely different life.

Four of us very much enjoyed our experience with Liz and her husband. The highlight for me was the experience of going to the fishing village in Sai Kung (the scenic drive, the sampan ride to get to the remote spot), meeting and learning more about the village and the life there, and enjoying the meal with a serene sea view prepared by fresh ingredients caught by Liz's father, neighbours and from the nearby fish farm, and enjoying the meal with the gracious hosts. Of course the experience alone doesn't cut it, indeed we were also impressed by the quality of the food and very much by Liz's cooking - fusing Asian and French elements as well as influences from their travels. I must say the latter (food quality & the cooking) surpassed my expectations. Also it helps that Liz was very organised regarding logistics.

We would love to be back again in the future.

I have to admit that when we were on our way i was pretty grumpy. Friends were late, it was freezing and windy.. plus i had been traveling from repulse bay... so... 2 hours away from the pier. However...We had an amazing meal with liz and her dad. They are so sweet and welcoming, and the house and dining area by the ocean is right on the water. Being from the seafood business, I particulalry had a great chat with her dad about the fishing history of Hong Kong (uh dynamite?!) They even gave me a special sea urchin tool made of bamboo! Gotta check out the urchins in summer.. liz says she has them on her summer menu *drool*

Food: The freshest, freshest seafood - octopus carpaccio was from octo caught the day before, juicy clams... tbh i just want to talk about the gigantic meaty crabs !!!!! I could barely finish my second one. I also was given the biggest one as my friends were not as into them as i was haha. Finished with steamed fish, seasonal veg stir fried and white rice. Perfect.

Drink: Sancerre!!! Liz actually had Sancerre in her fridge, lucky us she's got good taste AND her husband is french

Very warm welcome by chef Liz and her father. Enjoyed very much to have the chance to understand life in the small island and how her father trap fish/octopus, and how it USED to be very easy to catch a lot of fish/shellfish, and now the sea is very empty.
Dishes are well prepared and full of flavor. Being a crab enthusiast, I really had a great time there eating super fresh, sweet, meaty crab, 2 of them !

Had a fantastic time at Mafan Gweilo and the Laughing Squid. Not only was the meal good but the total experience, including the "voyage" to get there and the sea front dining made it an out of this (corporate) world experience.
Liz is a good conversationalist and host. If I spoke Cantonese, I'm sure I would have been entertained by Lupa as well.

I was drawn to Mafan Gweilo and the Laughing Squid Kitchen by its location, Ko Lau Wan, a fishing village at Sai Kung. Eventually I was happy that I made the absolute right choice to dine in this kitchen.

On a cloudy day, we started our trip to visit the Kitchen. Liz, the chef has arranged an one-day-permit so that we could straightly drive to Wong Shek Pier from there we transferred to Ko Lau Wan by ferry. Liz was at the pier welcoming us and led us to her home. The luncheon was arranged at the covered front yard with a view overlooking the Mirs Bay. The sitting area was filled with relaxing ambiance. Eco decors were around. We sat and enjoyed the home-made iced herb tea plus the wind breeze from the sea. The theme of the luncheon was seafood. Liz offered fusion cooking in some dishes, like the clam which was in Vietnamese style, a new taste and really good. The crabs, freshly caught in the morning, were simply cooked in steam. . This was absolutely superb, fresh with sea water favor. As seen, the crab interior was pure white, that signified the crabs were pollution free. Portion was big. Each guest got 2-3 crabs. Steam fish was another mouthwatering dish. We finished the meal in whole satisfaction.

On top of the yummy dishes, I appreciate Liz's loving care to her dad and the passion towards the village. Lupa, Liz's dad was a fisherman. We chatted on his fishing stories and daily living. He was an interesting and open-minded elderly. I was thrilled to know that Liz running the kitchen was to encourage Lupa to tell his story and to be sociable. Before leaving, Liz brought us around the village and introduced the history. It was an amazing day with stomach satisfaction, warmth and laughter.

Liz, thank you for the hospitality. Next time hope to see your assistant. Heartfelt wishes for your new beginning in September!

It was our first time to Ko Lau Wan and though it seemed far, the journey was very smooth and pleasant. The speed boat ride from Wong Shek pier only took 10 minutes. The overall experience was very fun! When Liz and Arnold came to pick us up, they also took the opportunity to fish out the sea urchins they caught the day before from the sea. We sat at the terrace outside their house which had a magnificent view of the sea and blue skies. The seafood was delicious and our highlight was the steamed fish. We could not have enough of it and savoured every last drop of the sauce. Can't wait to go back!
