The Italian Village Kitchen and Cooking Classes

Fiorenza D. from Hong Kong

About the kitchen

Whoever enters my house says s/he feels a very warm atmosphere. I live in a newly refurbished house in the very green location that nestles Shek Mun Kap Village near Tung Chung. I like to decorate it with bunches of leaves and flowers that I find during my strolls around here in order to create a sort of continuity between the house and the surroundings . I love to knock down the walls. I was born and raised in a large Venetian family at the times when the women of the house would spend most of their time in the kitchen so...sometimes ago. There is where I learned the basics of the culinary art and much more. Mine is the authentic traditional Italian cuisine that includes all the 19 regions from north to south combined with more modern recipes. I source many of my products directly from Italy. Menus may slightly chanche according to the availability of the sesonsl produce on the market.

I explore the countryside, read, play with my dogs and do researches on old Italian recipes to adapt them to the modern life that requires light and healthy dishes and dream of South Africa and Namibia where I have spent wonderful long spells fishing on the Okavango river cooking on camp fires and learning to spot the zodiac in the sky. I also teach Italian cooking at my own place, at The Cooking Alley school ( former Jogwan ) in Quarry Bay and at Pantry Magic in Sheung Wan.

First of all I was thankful that Fiorenza took on our booking so last minute. (The morning of) The location itself was way out of our usual whereabouts so it was nice to be at a quaint part of Hong Kong. We enjoyed the food, atmosphere and Fiorenza's hospitality. The food was a homemade affair and absolutely delicious. My friend who doesn't like the HK style creamy carbonara loved the one that was served - an authentic Italian recipe without all the cream. The chicken was tasty and she makes very generous portions; enough for us to take some home too! We liked that there wasn't fancy side plate decorations and presentation but authentic home style cuisine that we thoroughly enjoyed. We also had time to interact with Fiorenza as well as privacy to ourselves in her warm and welcoming living room. Thank you for such a wonderful meal.

Reply from  How can guests be nicer ? Sonia brought me a bunch of beautiful flowers ! I was very touched. Thank you Sonia and friends for coming and sharing with me your first experience of the Italian home cuisine in the rural HK.

My daughters say "GO HERE IF YOU LOVE FOOD and LIKE EATING!" My kids took a cooking class and made gnocchi. They loved it.
I took 7 of my friends here and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a three course meal. We were able to enjoy a great night uninterrupted by servers and not having to worry about serving anyone. We were served and served well. The food was light and beautiful. Sicilian chicken, buretta pasta was fresh and a variety of bruschetta with veggies. She is a true Italian gem in this village. I highly recommend to treat yourselves.

I had the pleasure to dine at Fiorenza's table with my friends and my family a couple of times already and we had a great time. The ambience is nice and very quiet and the food really delicious. I'm Italian so I have really enjoyed the familiar taste of home dishes not commonly found in HK. The prices are all very reasonable and I would definitely recommend it to everybody! Well done Fiorenza, I will see you soon.

Reply from  Thank you Cristina, your comment is particularly valuable to me because I have learned you are good cook too. I'll be delighted to host you and your friends/family again.

The food was good and cooked as my mom would have cooked it. We enjoyed not only the flavors of the real Italian dishes but also the interesting conversation with Fiorenza and her knowledge of the ingredients. Overall an excellent experience to be repeated.

Reply from  I'm very glad to hear you felt at home and above all that my dishes reminded you familiar tastes. Mamas are the ones that do it best for Italians.
